San Jose City Hall, 1958-2005

Designed by architect Donald F. Haines, the new city hall opened on March 27, 1958. The new city hall, according to Mayor Robert Doerr, reflected "a modern symbol embodying San Jose in its accelerating post-World War II growth period." The construction of the new city hall reflected San Jose's change in the form and direction of governmental buildings as older facilities--like the victorian-age Old City Hall--were torn down.

The Modern Period design of curtain walls, concrete, steel, glass, and aqua porcelain reflected architectural innovation in the 1950s. The design of the building caught the attention of the architectural community, praised by Look Magazine, Architect and Engineer, Engineering News Record, and The American City.

Currently, the building sits empty but qualifies for Federal, State, and City landmark status.
